Online ordering interfaces should start targeting Android, Nielson implies

According to August data from The Nielsen Company, Android is now the most popular operating system among people who bought a smartphone in the past six months, while Blackberry RIM and Apple iOS are in a statistical dead heat for second place among recent acquirers.

The news could affect the development of online ordering apps for the limited-service restaurant segment, some of which have been created or optimized for particular handsets so far.

Online and mobile ordering has become a primary means of pizza restaurant business, for example, with Domino’s officials first reporting last fall that online orders account for almost a quarter of company sales.  The company also was recently reported to be the fourth largest retailer online.
